Use Caution When Loan Shopping On The Internet

Use Caution When Loan Shopping On The Internet

By MCUN

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're shopping around for a loan, the Internet provides a wealth of options from which to compare and replaces legwork with the click of a mouse. The downside, however, is that the proliferation of mortgage-related spam confuses the task and requires consumers to be cautious (PR Newswire Aug. 10).

Follow these simple guidelines:

Use a secure Web site that encrypts your information using secure sockets layer (SSL) technology. Look for the key or lock icon in the lower right-hand corner of your browser window.

Work with lenders you know and trust. Narrow your search to those with a reputation for service and dependability. Check with the Better Business Bureau, the area Chamber of Commerce, or the TRUSTe program.

If you use a service that "matches" you with lenders, look to see if they've prescreened the lenders on their networks.

Make sure there's a toll-free number to reach a real, live person.

Set offline expectations with your lender up front. Make sure you have a dedicated loan officer, and work with the officer to determine concrete closing date, set a schedule of due dates, and review the good faith estimate of closing costs--both at the outset of the process and just prior to closing--to avoid surprises at the settlement table.

Protect your privacy. Take time to read and agree with your lender's privacy policy before you give your name, Social Security number, and address.

Check your credit union's Web site for loan information.
